Haiti Shoe Drive

The Kiwanis Club of Blue Island, IL is sponsoring a used shoe drive to benefit victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.  The shoes must be gently used or new.  The shoes collected will benefit Share your soles, a local organization that will distribute the shoes to Haiti. Such as in the First Midwest Bank, Charter One, Blue Island Public Library, Blue Island Recreation Center, Blue Island Park District, Memorial Park Field house, Blue Island City Hall – Clerks office and Metro South Medical Center – Cafeteria main level.   You can drop of shoes at several locations in Blue Island.  Shoes can be dropped of now until April 5^th.

In recent news, our youth have been violently attacked or are violently attacking one another. How much of the responsibility belongs to the parent.  It is the responsibility of the parent to know the whereabouts of their children. If parents were held accountable for the heinous actions of their children, do you think different behaviors would be exibited in parenting?

They are in undereducated schools and underprivileged communities, which perpetuates a cycle of gangs, drugs, and violence. We need to address the needs of our children. It is our responsibility as a village to lead them down the right path. We must raise their expectations and reiterate their worthiness.

The League of Scholars (Grades 5 – 8) is a positive mentorship program designed to produce future leaders in the fields of world leadership and public service. For only $30/month you could be investing in the future of your child's social development, financial awareness, cultural knowledge and diversity. Your child(ren) will learn from international movers and shakers as we visit: the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the United Nations Chicago Chapter, the Consulate Generals of different Nations, the City Club of Chicago, International Financial Institutions and Markets, Recreational and Social Events at Millennium Park. We are currently taking applications; however, please note that space is extremely limited. This is a year-round mentoring program for grades 5-8. President Obama Launches White House Internship Program

President Obama today launched the White House Internship Program for his administration and announced
that applications are currently being accepted for the summer of 2009.  Those selected to participate in the
program will gain valuable job experience and an inside look at the life of White House staff while building
leadership skills.

HHUD Attends Education Council's 2nd Annual Peace Conference

Hood Hopes & Urban Dreams attended the Education Council's 2nd Annual Peace Conference. The conference was full of engaging workshops that dared the youth to get involved. A challenge was set forth by Mikva Challenge to the 375 Chicago high school students in attendance to create peace projects within their schools and/or communities. The peace ambassadors of the projects chosen would receive a mini grant of $1000 to implement their project within their school and/or community.
