Young Chicago Authors: Brave New Voices

Footage of the 2008 Brave New Voices youth poetry contest in Washington:

The artists, Nate Marshall and Demetrius Amparen were both highschool students at the time of this video. They wrote this peom for Young Chicago Authors, a program to designed to inspire and develop literary skills for youth. The content of the poem was inspired by the violent deaths of the artists' friends and the fear that they too could become victims of similar crimes. The reaction of the audience, which includes students from all over the country is a testiment of how the horror of youth violence is widespread.

Share Your Thoughts: Are parents responsible?

In recent news, our youth have been violently attacked or are violently attacking one another. How much of the responsibility belongs to the parent.  It is the responsibility of the parent to know the whereabouts of their children. If parents were held accountable for the heinous actions of their children, do you think different behaviors would be exibited in parenting?

We are in a state of EMERGENCY! Many of our children lack the necessary resources to succeed. They are in undereducated schools and underprivileged communities, which perpetuates a cycle of gangs, drugs, and violence. We need to address the needs of our children. It is our responsibility as a village to lead them down the right path. We must raise their expectations and reiterate their worthiness.
